Group Presentation #6: (Gender Studies and/or Feminist Theory) Group Reflection

My group members and I presented on Gender Studies and/or Feminist Theory.  Our presentation consisted of videos and advertisements that portrayed women in various ways.  I was in charge of how women were portrayed in the media. Unfortunately I was not able to present my section in class because we ran out of time during our presentation but the majority of the discussion was covered during the videos that were shown.  When I started to look for images, I was appalled at the type of images that I found.  Not only were women portrayed as being very slender and physically attractive but they were always shown as being very docile and as sexual objects.  Women were even being used in a very sexual ways to sell products.  For example, I found a Burger King ad that portrayed women eating burgers in various ways to arouse and entice men to buy their products. The ad reads, “It’ll Blow Your Mind Away” with the image of a woman posing in a very sexual manner to attract the attention of men.  Another ad even pushes the boundaries even further and illustrates a woman dressed as a nun who has sex with a priest which results in the birth of chocolate.  This is the most appalling and inappropriate ad that I have ever seen.  This ad definitely tries sell their product by implying that even religious figures will commit a sin because that's just how delicious their chocolate is!
I also wanted to show a video called Killing Us Softly by Jean Kilbourne.  Since we ran out of time during class, I have posted the video on this blog.  Jean Kilbourne focuses on women in advertising and how throughout the decades, women have always been portrayed in very negative and degrading ways.  She has made numerous films about women in ads and definitely illustrates the impact that it has on viewers, especially young girls.
